The use of clothing and a little bit of imagination transformed the way you saw the world and effected the way you acted, spoke and thought the world saw you... You were instantly an adult - someone in control, full of life, excitement, potential, possibility...
You may be surprised to hear, this isn't something that changes as we age.
I'm sure you've experienced the joy, confidence and possibilities of donning a costume for a party or Halloween and becoming 'a character' for an evening.
Curiously enough, it actually extends past this into our choices of everyday clothing and outfits.
The phenomenon of Active Wear is not just about being in comfortable clothes to go to the grocery store and run around after kids - wearing gym clothes when you're not going to the gym is something I'm also 'guilty' of doing - because you know what? Wearing gym clothes makes me feel fit and active. It makes me feel like a gym junkie, even though I'm not. It helps me adopt that active persona and motivates me to get out there and do exercise during the day. Which makes me feel good about myself.
And the same goes for power suits in meetings, wedding dresses, black tie clothing, uniforms and any other outfits where we extend past how we usually dress and give meaning to how we look in certain outfits.
The meaning we give to the clothes we wear and how we see ourselves in them truly can transform your experience of the world.
The beauty of costume is that you can choose to give this same meaning to all of the clothes in your wardrobe - you can choose who you want to be and how you want to look and what energy you want to embody. And you can do this through truly owning your unique style.
A recent client expressed frustration at the thought that she had to change from her usual comfort outfit of jeans and a t-shirt to wear something more in line with what society might expect of her, she felt like she HAD to wear something 'better' to give herself more confidence and 'look as good as' other women she knew and often compared herself to.
But this is not the way I see it - there is no 'better', there is only the meaning WE give to clothes. If jeans and a t-shirt are the look you want to adopt today, but you worry what people might think when you go out in public - then you have two choices:
The secret to dressing everyday is NOT that you need to dress like someone else to improve your confidence, but that you ONLY NEED TO DRESS LIKE YOU - and not in the way that fashion trends tells us we should dress.
So many women lose sight of the child-like exploration of personal style, blindly try to follow fashion trends or wear clothing they don't particularly like because they want to fit in, they want to look the part at work, or at yoga, or when they go out with friends - but the truth is - the ONLY part you need to play is the one where you are authentically YOU.
But the true power of clothing as a costume for transformation, is you can use it to give you confidence for an important meeting, for a hot date or to smash your presentation and express how awesome you are - when you love and accept your way of dressing and showing up in the world.
Unearthing your unique personal style - the one that truly makes you feel amazing when you leave the house everyday - is about finding the 'costume' that befits the personality, the dreams, the hopes, the energy, the potential and the magic of YOU.
