In every moment our brains are bombarded with tens of millions of pieces of information - WAY too much for us to be able to process them all unconsciously or consciously... In all honesty, we can only hold about 7-9 things in our conscious mind at any one time - and even this is seriously overstating things!
So when something happens, although there is millions of things going on that make up the actual event or conversation or world around us, we only consciously process 7 of these things.
This means that you take the 7 bits of information and then filter them through your mind - your memories, your values, your beliefs, your 'personality type' - and you build your representation of the whole event. And then WE BELIEVE THIS IS REAL!
How fluffed up is that?
We don't know reality. We only know reality as it is represented in the movies of our minds. Based on almost no information at all. Based on the past. Based on our limited experiences of the world. Based on what we have seen on TV. Not reality at all.
So, when we stop ourselves from having the life that we want because we think that people will judge us - it is important to realise - that even IF they are thinking about us or judging us - it is based on only the 7 pieces of information they are able to hold in their conscious mind!! And it is not reality - it is not. So why torture ourselves over it.
We need to care enough about our own lives, and our own future, and our own dreams that we do not care about the possibility that someone might have some 'fluffed up not-real thought' about us.
Do you care enough about YOU - to care less about what other people think? Let me know in the comments below.
Thank you to James Haye Jr from The Coaching Room for inspiring this week's post after his inquiry into whether we can "Care enough to care less" in our study group last week.
