I have realised this week, I have a major 'personality fault'. Now I'm not just talking about your occasional hormonal psyche out - I'm talking about a serious eating after midnight, Jekyll and Hyde, giant green monster snap of a personality fault.
For those who know me on a personal level, you'd rarely if ever get to see it - but those who just sit on the outskirts of my life in an unassuming position of minor authority over me, must think I'm a psycho.
Completely out of my control, I turn from an angel of a cute and funny little Mogwai, into a scary, frustrated, destructive, freakish Gremlin.
The 'food after midnight' that turns me into an uncontrollable green reptilian monster.... - someone giving me orders! - okay that maybe a little extreme - but when someone tells me what to do, or feels they have to remind me how to do my job - my blood starts to boil, I rebel, & I want to scream - 'give me some respect - I'm smart enough to know what to do on my own!!!'
Pure Gremlin rebellion.
But this is just who I am...
Obviously, this is something coming from deep inside me that feels like it was never shown any respect, and the usually playful Mogwai needs to tell people:
"I might be youthful, happy, and fun - but I'm also bloody intelligent - I'm just not so serious and formal like you."
So authority issues hey?... It's funny though, because in the past I would always analyse, look at the lesson I need to learn in the situation, learn it, or do my best to control it. But now, I'm at the age where I'm just thinking -
This 'fault' is a fundamental part of who I am.
Jekyll and Hyde are one and the same, the Hulk is Dr Robert Bruce Banner, and the Mogwai doesn't exist without the Gremlin side of who it is.
Let Gremlins take over the world.
We each have a part of our personalities that convention has told us is wrong or unacceptable - yes there are some things that are illegal and just plain evil that we should never accept - but most things we can embrace and use to our advantage in life.
This distaste for authority is why I am pursuing self employment, it is why I am an entrepreneur, and it is why I am so creative, passionate and unconventional.
Our Gremlins aren't something to lock away or destroy - they are the eccentricities we should embrace the most, and are some of the most important aspects of our personality.
Why try to be like everyone else and conform to the expectations of others or the institutionalised world we live in - when who we are is so much more exciting, so much more fun, and could possibly have an impact on changing how this world works.
Our gremlins are triggers for this world change, they are strengths to be maximised, and they are what makes you uniquely you.
ACTION POINT: What parts of your personality might be considered a 'problem', or have you felt the need to change to be more like other people? Are these personality traits based on an underlying positive motivation?
Download the work sheet for this post to help you turn your gremlins into the coolest part of your personality - I always did love the gremlin who wore the lipstick and costume jewellery the most!
Head on over to Facebook now and give me some love! I've posted my favourite clip from the Gremlin film - and started a conversation about how to convert your Gremlin into your secret weapon.
